Doss' death comes with the Olivia Tremor Control back and functioning after a long layoff; having recently appeared at festivals like All Tomorrow's Parties, Primavera, and Pitchfork Music Fest, and released a new three-part psychedelic suite, "The Game You Play Is In Your Head: Parts 1, 2 and 3." Their 1996 album, Dusk at Cubist Castle, had grown into a psych-pop classic from the Elephant 6's glory days.
Doss co-founded the label with Neutral Milk Hotel's Jeff Mangum, The Apples in Stereo's Robert Schneider, and OTC foil Will Cullen Hart in the '90s. Both he and the label were born in Louisiana, but relocated to Athens, Georgia. "When he asked me to join (the band) in (1993), he taught me how to play bass. He was the most beautiful spirit," OTC's John Fernandes told the Athens Banner-Herald. "It's just such a shock... such a tragedy."
