Free Music Monday Hangedup Tony Conrad Principles

Tony Conrad is, for many, the Godfather of drone; a minimalist composer and sound-art titan whose distant history in the groundbreaking Theater Of Eternal Music had lead him, over the years, to collaborations with Faust and Gastr del Sol, and the kind of revered status that earns septuagenarians places on, say, Animal Collective ATP bills.

But Conrad hardly rests on his laurels, the polymath (artist, filmmaker, lecturer, et al) continuing musical collaborations to this day. The latest is a full-length, free-form, 45-minute suite in collaboration with instrumental drums-and-viola duo Hangedup. It's billed as Hangedup & Tony Conrad, called Transit of Venus, and just released on Constellation.

"Principles" —and the collaboration as whole— sounds just like you expect Hangedup + Tony Conrad might: scraped viola and violin building up agitated drones, whilst Eric Craven's locomotive percussion rattles, coughs, and chugs ever onwards towards the receding horizon.
