Girls Tour In 2012 Talk Crazy Critical Acclaim

Girls second LP, Father, Son, Holy Ghost, was, for me, one of the most overrated albums of 2011, an LP acclaimed for greatness that it never measured up to. Chet 'JR' White —the multi-instrumentalist and producer who fleshes out the confessional songs of the San Franciscan duo's other half, Christopher Owens— respectfully disagrees.

"Maybe this makes me sound like an overconfident jack-ass," said White, in an interview in advance of their forthcoming Australian tour, "but every time we've finished something I've thought that it totally should go on to some kind of success. Everyone always asked us if we'vebeen surprised about what's happened, and, well, kind of not. We've always been supremely confident in what we're doing... A part of me definitely thinks 'hell yeah we deserve it!'"

And what about that infamous 9.3 on Pitchfork? Is that a medal of honor, or an albatross? "There's this really uncomfortable part about it, where you just desperately want it to not matter that much," White says. "Putting a graded number on music is itself is inherently weird. But you can't dismiss it, because obviously it helps. It's been proven that something like that can totally change people's fortunes, and so there's very much this feeling that you have to humbly accept the number you've been handed. You have to think politically about it and say 'yes, it's great, thank you very much!'"

As well as touring through the Southern Hemisphere, Girls have other notable shows coming up: finding a place on the Coachella Poster, and touring through North America in March with Unknown Mortal Orchestra opening up...
