Three years ago, Crocodiles debuted as veritable Spacemen 3 tribute act on Summer of Hate. And though 2010's Sleep Forever marked a marked improvement, its best jams —like the hypnotic "All My Hate and My Hexes Are for You"— still felt like so much Suicide worship.
"Sunday (Psychic Conversation #9)," the first single from Endless Flowers, has more of a late-'80s/early-'90s vibe to it, with the noise-guitar influence of My Bloody Valentine and Yo La Tengo.
But, peer past the monstrous distortion and its impossible to see something most not-'90s about "Sunday": it's lack of sarcasm, aggression, and angst. "It's Sunday/and the world loves itself," Welchez wails, on opening, and though the sentiments don't entirely hold (the song's a study of materialism and skin-deep relations), the major keys, insistent organ, and persistent noise make it play like an endlessly 'up' anthem.
