Free Music Monday AU Get Alive

"Every day we die," croons Luke Wyland, in what marks a most unlikely entreaty to a day-seizing, marrow-sucking, soul-soaring anthem. AU's highly-rhythmic, frenetically-played racket commands so much energy that it often feels as if it must be driven by joy. If not a joy at being alive —joie de vivre, indeed— at least a joy in playing music, in making sound amongst other human beings.

But "Get Alive" is a moment of pure musical joy: frenetic piano, percussion, organs, woodwinds, and near post-rock-ish crescendo employed in a harmonious, cresting, shouting anthem. The anthem is it's two-world title, repeated as unending refrain; shouted like a hosanna from on high, with voices —chiefly Wyland and Holland 'Like a Villain' Andrews— ricocheting back-and-forth as if echoing over rooftops.

"Get Alive" comes as the second single from AU's awesome third album, Both Lights, following the just-as-brilliant "Solid Gold." Together they're a pretty good representation of why the record's one of the best LPs of the year thus far.
