In the latest episode of the Days of Our Grimes, "Genesis" arrives as the second single from the forthcoming third LP for Montreal's Claire Boucher, Visions. It seemed unlikely that anything —like at all, ever— could trump the glories of "Oblivion," but "Genesis" rises to the occasion. The occasion of Grimes' almighty breakout. Cometh the hour, cometh the woman.
Where "Oblivion" was the most forceful, lyrically direct, and pop-like jam, "Genesis" is a thing of swirling, otherworldly beauty; shot through with an intangible sadness that's elusive, impossible to pinpoint.
It's Grimes at her most Grimey: waves of her washed-out voice and spangly synths dancing dreamily, giddy over a crunchy drum-track. It's both bashful and brazen, eerily beautiful in a way that's cold and distant, yet warm and reassuring; like an audio embrace from the spectral realm.
Basically, what I'm typing is: I've listened to this 78 times and counting, and I'm yet to truly understand its mysteries. However she does it, Boucher undoubtedly makes magic, here.
