Algiers' first single, "Para," finds Calexico in familiar form: all sweeping, cinematic strings and horns, with Joey Burns' smooth croon riding over a vast landscape.
Calexico recorded the LP with long-time collaborateur Craig Schumacher, but relocated from their Tucson homebase to write and record Algiers in New Orleans. The album takes its name from a local neighborhood Burns and Convertino frequented.
"The place is strong and bold, soulful to the core, but surrounded by a sea of darkness," Burns says, of the adopted 'hometown' of the new album. "There's something creepy and old on the edge of town and written throughout the town's histories. Those kinds of aesthetics help with the writing."
